We have one of the world's largest stocks of books on Cyprus. These include travel books to the Republic of Cyprus, history books from protohistoric times to the present day in both Greek and English and Cypriot poetry and literature.

Cyprus 1974-2002 - Our view (as Cypriots),   of the division of the island of Cyprus is that the invasion by the Greek junta on July the 15th 1974, was a disgrace and that the toppling of that junta on the 23rd of July (eight days later) an inevitability. The Turkish invasions of July the 20th 1974 and August the 14th were an equal disgrace and the aftermath has been allowed to continue to this day. The Greek government at that time threw "a Galtieri", eight years before the Falklands war. They were extremely unpopular and decided that 'Enosis' (unification of Cyprus with Greece), would somehow, make them lovable. The Turks, of course, were guarantors of the independence of Cyprus and were thus 'justified' through the Greek junta's intransigence to intervene. That they subsequently re-invaded  and took 37% of the island should come as no surprise to anyone looking at Ankara's foreign policy during the '50s and '60's.

Demographically Cyprus has been majority 'Greek' for millennia despite the long list of invaders and rulers. The proximity to Cyprus of Turkey (oft mentioned by believers that Cyprus should be a Turkish island) is more due to the fact the Turks, under the Ottomans and later, expanded their territories all through the old Greek cities and villages of Asia-Minor. That Turkey is closer to Cyprus (though not as close as Syria!) than Greece really makes not a jot of difference, especially as Cyprus is an independent republic and has been since 1960; it would be tantamount to saying that Britain should be French as we're an island just off the coast of France.  Reportedly, there are fewer than 60,000 Turkish Cypriots living on the island, 26 years after their 'liberation' by Turkish mainland troops, compared with over 120,000 in 1974. After the ethnic cleansing of 200,000 Greek-Cypriots the Turks have completely altered the demography of Cyprus. We live in hope for an island where Cypriots (Greek and Turkish) can live together in peace. S.J.
